More misconceptions

Overheard in conversation the other day:

"I would like to give up smoking one day, I am not ready yet. I think hypnotherapy would work, but once they got you under they can do anything to you."

We know this is not true, just have to convince some people that you can't be made to do anything against your will when having a hypnotherapy session.

Do you find it important to treat clients in a very quiet place? I work in three different locations. One of them has a reception quite close and the ringing of the phone can be heard sometimes. I find it okay if there is a bit of background noise. What are your experiences?

I received this lovely email from someone I saw for exam nerves last week. It's great to get messages like this, it makes it all so worthwhile.

"I am just emailing you say a big thank you because whatever you did last week, made me go into the exam and I think perform quite well. Also I haven't had a negative thought in my head since and I have slept all the way through the night everyday since which is fantastic.

Thank you so much for your help, i am enjoying everything again and I can turn off from my studies completly again and relax.

I will probably come back again before the summer, but until then may I wish you good luck for the future."

Hypnotherapy in Japanese with Reiko Dean

When I did my training several years ago, there was a Japanese woman on my course. She works in Isleworth, West London. She is very busy seeing Japanese patients. There was a good market waiting for her as there are very few other Japanese hypnotherapists in the area. Her website is If there is anyone out there who would like a session in Japanese, and lives nearby, do look her up.

Third parties phoning re stopping smoking

I sometimes get calls from people who want to make an appointment for someone else to quit smoking. In this situation, I always insist on speaking to the person who wants to quit. I need to be sure that person has definitely decided to give up. If not, it would be a waste of money. If they weren't sure they were ready, they would be more likely to fail. Of course, not everyone will be successful, but this helps to eliminate the ones most likely to fail.

How I started

About 12 years ago I met Robert Matthews (, who became a good friend. He was a hypnotherapist. He used to talk to me about hypnotherapy and gave me some treatment to help me lose weight. I was very interested and wanted to become a hypnotherapist myself. I felt that I couldn't at the time, because we lived in the same district and I didn't think it was right to be in competition with a friend. Then two things happened. I moved away, just 10 miles or so, and thought I could train and work in my new area. Robert also became very busy, in fact he had too many patients so when I had finished my training he was able to recommend patients to me. Also, some people prefer to see a woman, so that worked well. Now I am established and if either of us get too busy we can help each other.

Patient or client?

Which term do I prefer? I prefer "patient". Some people may think that means someone who is ill, and someone who comes for habit breaking such as smoking or nail biting is not ill. Personally, I find "client" rather detached and business-like, but "patient" more caring.   What do you think?

Past life regression

If someone calls me who asks for past life regression, I always explain I only do this if they have a problem that they think may have a relevance to something that happened in a past life, not just because they think it would be fun to find out who they were in a past life.

Advertising on the radio

I plan to advertise on local radio in 2006, on Star FM. This is a local radio station, in the Berkshire area. This came about because I got to know Adrian Juste, the former BBC Radio 1 DJ. He now makes commercials for radio. I am looking forward to seeing if I get a good response.
