Father of Modern Hypnosis Marketing/Public Awareness

Dr. Patrick Porter and Positive Changes Hypnosis.

I don't know if anyone has beaten me to this and I hope I'm not the first to say this on a public forum, but every hypnotist owes a big thanks to Dr. Porter and his team of Positive Changes Hypnosis owners. I swear, I'm not just saying this because I'm on the team. I just got lucky to be mentored by such a brilliant man implementing intelligently, a dynamite plan that would forever change the way the mainstream public views hypnosis.

When I first got my training in 1994, practicing hypnotists were few, and even fewer fully relied on hypnosis as a sole career - mostly it was a side career (or a hobby) that was practiced out of their home office. In fact, I knew of one man who would meet with clients in a park, at a specific park bench! The going rate here in a big city like San Diego at the time was say...$50.00 a session, and hypnotists were scared to ask for that!

Common sayings of hypnotists in 1994:
"I don't do it for the money."
"I feel guilty getting paid for this work."
"I just ask for a donation."
"It would be ' wrong ' to get paid for helping people with my gift."
"I do it for barter."
"I'm a healer, not a salesperson."

Now, there are more sayings, but you get the drift. And if you're saying to yourself, "I've never heard hypnotists say that," well, you're showing your age. You are either under 30, or a newbie hypnotist. Of course, the only ones who had trouble asking for money in exchange for hypnosis were the clinicians - the entertainers were far ahead of the game. They made sure they got their money, and had no problem asking for as much as they could get!

Dr. Porter, and the nationwide Positive Changes hypnosis centers positively changed all that. Dr. Porter required all us affiliates to advertise widely - using testimonials. Collectively, we've spent millions on advertising: big city newspapers, television, radio, internet, yellow pages. We did interviews. Wrote articles. Delivered presentations. Attended Chamber meetings. We did everything to get the word out and people started flooding through our doors. Part of our free consultation process is to make sure we demystify hypnosis, to make sure prospective clients get a clear understanding of what hypnosis is, and what it isn't. For the past decade PCH has been educating the public about the value of hypnotherapy. I say this seriously, thanks to Dr. Porter's influence, hypnosis has become closer to being a household word than ever before in it's history.

Because of it's general acceptance these days, more people are seeking out hypnotists, and more hypnotists are in demand. Today, in 2006, the going rate here in San Diego is between $150.00 and $200.00 a private, one-time session. Big difference in the past 12 years, you think? Because hypnotists are now able to work at hypnotherapy full time and pay their bills from it, they are taking salesmanship more seriously. We ask for payment with self-confidence, because we now believe in our worth, that we are accessing our clients to somewhere wonderful they might not have access to without us.

Sure, people have stolen the methods of Positive Changes Hypnosis (I won't mention names but you'll know who you are) and I guess that's just the nature of the beast. Nonetheless, we all should take a moment, a moment of silence everyday we walk into our comfortable, air-conditioned offices, or can afford to get on a plane to Italy for our fantasy vacation, and say a special Thank You to Dr. Porter for being a good father - the good father of Hypnosis Marketing and Public Awareness.

Most important, it's ok to feel good about him. Take it from me, Patrick Porter is a good man. He's humble, and spiritual, and generous, and compassionate. All he teaches isn't just for his fellow hypnotists, it's for the clients and for a better, more secure world. Like he says, "We aren't successful until are clients are successful." So True! Thanks Dr. Porter for being such a positive role-model.
